BS8599-1 Burns First Aid Kit

BS8599-1 is the British Standard that provides guidance on workplace first aid kits, including the recommended contents, kit sizes, and the type of first aid provision required based on workplace hazards, employee numbers, and levels of risk.

The 2026 amendments to BS8599-1 now incorporate burns first aid kits and guidance on when they should be provided within the workplace. The updated guidance recommends that employers provide burns first aid kits wherever a risk of burn injuries has been identified following a workplace risk assessment.

Modern workplaces continue to present a wide range of burn injury risks, including heat, hot liquids, steam, chemicals, electricity, machinery, and catering equipment. The updated BS8599-1 guidance reflects the importance of rapid treatment and suitable burn care provision following a workplace burn incident.

The amendments also recognise that suitable burns first aid supplies should be clearly identifiable, easily accessible, and readily available alongside existing workplace first aid arrangements.

Employers remain responsible for carrying out a suitable workplace risk assessment and ensuring adequate first aid provision is available for the hazards identified on site.

Where a risk of burn injuries has been identified, BS8599-1:2026 guidance recommends that dedicated burns first aid kits are provided alongside workplace first aid kits to help support rapid treatment and minimise the severity of burn injuries.

The guidance also notes that where there is a risk of burns to the face, suitable face burn dressings should be provided. In environments where there is not easy or rapid access to a continuous 20-minute supply of running water, suitable burn dressings should also be made available.
