BS8599 Compliant First Aid Kits

The latest British Standards update, BS8599-1:2019+A1:2026, sets out revised recommendations for workplace first aid provision, helping employers review and update their first aid equipment based on identified risks, workplace size, and the people who may be present on site. The updated standard expands beyond traditional first aid kits to include specific guidance on eye wash kits, burns kits, and consideration of Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs), supporting a more comprehensive approach to workplace emergency preparedness.

As part of the 2026 amendment, dedicated recommendations have been introduced for eye wash and burns first aid kits. Following a suitable first aid needs assessment, eye wash kits should be provided where there is a risk of eye injury and BS8599 workplace first aid kits are present. Burns kits should be available in workplaces where there is a high risk of burn injuries. Employers are also encouraged to review AED provision and ensure devices are clearly visible and readily accessible where appropriate.
